One thing I notice is that a lot of times reality isn't always rational. 
Fundamentals don't match price.
 
Fundamentally, he who makes food makes the rules may be a true statement.
 
And another reality is that he who has enough guns and expendible bodies can
steal food - something you also recognize, since on your mountain you can
your neighbors seem to be prepared for that.
 
 
 
Price moment in markets is the same, price movement always seems to move far
away from fundamentals both to the upside and downside, as one group tries to
steal from the other.

Very incorrect. He who has the food. Or better still, he who can produce
the food.

Potatoes and carrots store well in most garden soil, so depending on
the amount of humus in your soil, it might be best to not dig them
until needed. Heap insulating mulch over the top. Sweet potatoes store
best in a warmer, drier place. We use the storage room above our
bedroom, just lay them out on newspaper.
