To parapharse Gimli to Frodo, "You're full of misunderstandings, Mr. Baggins!"

Agribusinesses have debts and loans but by and large the sort of farmer we
are talking about doesn't. I know very few established rural people who
carry a
mortgage and for all of them, the bills are quite modest and mostly things
they could do without anyway. And believe me, debt vs. no debt are two
entirely different universes in which to live. I know that some people have
to take
on debt. But when the wise person takes on debt, the idea of discharging it
becomes an obsession rather than the debt becoming a way of life. They think
about it when they go to bed and when they rise up, it is whittles and drink
to them, man and wife, the lead in their pencil and the marrow in their
bones.
And so it gets paid if it is at all humanly possible to do so.

For agribusiness debt is not something to be paid off and rid of, rather it's
a way of life.

It is hard for thee to kick against the goad! No, it's just the opposite.
Largely institutionalizing food and commodities gives the people some
appearance of autonomy. For the people to be supported directly by
institutions
necessitates diversifying the food and other necessities.
