My grandmother also lived on the former family farm in N Wisconsin until 90
yrs old and had the garden going and canning every year. One difference -
she received a social security check.... something I often question if a)
I'll get one, and b) if I do if it will buy anything LOL.

i think one person providing for themselves would spend a lot less energy
than
trying to grow enough food for a family, if that one person is willing to
alter
their diet to a reduced variety. the old man down my road, who i look to for
inspiration for my own future, has
a medium size garden but he does literally no other farm work .... . he's 96
and still going strong. has had a hip replacement
about 10 years ago. no family to care for him, either.

Excellent point! When Jesus said "The meek shall inherit the Earth..." ,
the word used there is 'praus' which means 'easy going'. 'not given to being
spooked or ruffled'.
