I recently read an article that said 70 percent of all GPs replied in a study that they were unhappy with their jobs and would gladly change professions if they could. They cited the biggest problem as all the paperwork the insurance companies require, that they spend half their day doing paperwork and the other half rushing patients through. The article also said there are very few med students that want to become GPs, it's much more lucrative to become a specialist, and that there will be a shortage of GPs in the future. I know our own GP has recently started to cancel our appointments with little more than 2 hours notice, and I can only presume he has decided to golf. As much as I like him and feel he is competent in diagnosis, we are shopping around for a new one.

So once again, it's the insurance companies who are causing the problem, instead of helping. If they don't get the hmo paperwork out of whatever the solution is going to be, I can't see the situation changing much.

I do agree with you that national centralized health-care is a bad idea. But, only because I think it will not work as advertised and will lead to rationing and lower the standards of health care for everone in the country except the very rich..................

Just like Medicare has done.
