I have pictures, but the butternut hickory looks almost identical to the butternut, and I'm pretty sure both grow here.
We have pignut, mockernut, bitternut, butternut, shagbark(the best firewood), shellbark, sand, and water hickories in this area. I have all but shellbark, sand, and water hickories on this property. Of course, the butternut hickory is questionably a butternut.
The only thing I can see if the number of leaflets on the leaf.
Butternut has 7-14 leaflets.
Butternut Hickory has 7-11 leaflets.

So I guess if I find 13 leaflets, it'd be a butternut.

I can't wait until tomorrow..

I have always thought I had a butternut tree here, but upon looking at
the book, I can't tell the difference between a butternut and a
butternut hickory. Is there an easy way to tell the difference?
Suspect tree doesn't quite look like other hickories and is growing on
the banks of the dry creek.

The nut is distinct from a black walnut or hickory. It is similar to black walnut but more elongated. It has more oil and is sweeter to the taste.
