If you find one, please let me know.
Community is one of the important factors for us in relocating and it's something that's impossible to nail down over the Net.
Wasn't it Ithaca that instituted a shared risk insurance plan any resident could buy into? It was a long time ago that I read about this.
I was thrilled by the idea, a community of individuals banded together to help each other. You can create a lot of art or organic food or care giving if you're not working
40 hours a week just to hang onto your health insurance.
Did any of you read "Nickel and Dimed On (Not) Getting By in America" , by Barbara Ehrenreich? Here's a review by Naomi Klein: ""Drunk on dot-coms and day trading,
America has gone blind to the downside of its great prosperity. In Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich expertly peels away the layers of self- denial, self-interest, and self-protection
that separate the rich from the poor, the served from the servers, the housed from the homeless. This brave and frank book is ultimately a challenge to create a less
divided society."
The book is ten years old now but things are not getting any better.
Cheers

I've often mused on the tension, the dichotomy with homesteading and
community. If everyone is self-reliant and largely self-sufficient,
then we need each other less. Of course there are still those crafts
and skills that most of us are not good at or even much interested in
doing.
Anyone know of a study or a book that explores the effect on community
that self-reliance creates?
