We've thought of the reed fencing--I've used it before in my small backyard in Austin and like the way it looks. It does rot over time, but it lasted a good decade. Seems (at that time anyway) like they only order so much of it, then they don't get it in until the next season. It comes in 15 foot rolls, so I'd probably have to hit alot of Home Depots. I think it runs about $20-25 a roll. We are strongly considering it.
A friend of mine that imports earth-friendly natural canvas shower curtains is getting his vendor to price a 72" tall industrial roll of the fabric for me. I'm sure I would have to punch some kind of vent holes so breezes could still get through. Maybe I could paint a Trompe l'oeil scene of the beauty that should be there.
Bamboo would probably grow on the moon, but I'd like to stay away from anything invasive (ie. high maintenance keeping it under control). Plus it's just so darn tropical looking and this is the land of cacti and yuccas. Funny thing, the neighbor begged me yesterday not to plant ligustrum, the choice of screening material of the area's previous generation--readily available and just as invasive. So not only has he destroyed our beauty and our privacy, but now he's trying to control the solution too.
Thanks for all the ideas folks!

Home Depot imports some type of reed fencing, it comes in 8' high rolls. I have no idea on the cost but I suspect that you could find something like that locally (or sort of locally).
Will bamboo grow in your area?
