We're speaking primarily of the chief executive, I think, and his oath is
most certainly not to protect the people. The oath that he has broken goes
more like this:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office
of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability,
preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
I remind everyone, we do not live in a Democracy. Democracy is a step away
from Socialism, which is another step away from Communism. Democracy is mob
rule. We live in a Republic.
This push towards democracy (or even skipping straight to outright
socialism) is a big part of what has been fouling up this country terribly
since at least WW2, if not earlier.
In a Republic, our elected officials are supposed to govern according to the
law (with the Constitution trumping any laws that congress craps out short
of a Constitutional amendment, let alone any executive order).
In a Republic, we have the rule of law.
In a Democracy, we have the rule of a majority.
In our Republic, it really doesn't matter if most people are okay with the
warrentless wiretaps. It's against the law. Don't like it? Amend the
Constitution. You'll need more than a simple majority to do that.

the same hands…may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny."
