With apologies to Don, the 752 pages of
the above volume, thoroughly footnoted,
stepping on a myriad toes to 'correct the
victor's version of history' probably has
no equal in naming names and 'measuring'
locations - it has references to populations
from Europe back in the years 900 to 1050
and Asia in the 1200s/1300s showing the
effects of travel'n'trade and policies formed
for, by, and from them,
for what was happening while America
was being colonized from the 1600s
and from there on telling the whos, hows,
whys, and wherefors that instigated the
Declaration of Independence - from a for
agriculture and on through the alphabet.
It's not that I'm 'dissing' anybody else's
choice reading - there are only so many
hours in a day, and most history is *so*
boring I hate it - unless it is well-written
in addition to being factual - and this *is*.
If it could hold my flitting attention
for all those pages it had to be ...

I find history fascinating. "The Peoples History of the American
Revolution" is an easy read and draws as its much of its source material,
letters written at the time. Howard Zinn's "The Peoples History of the
United States" is another easy read that covers much of the same ground
with modern scholarship.
I manage to read 1 to 5 books a week. A good history will tank most of a
week to read and understand. Right now I am working on a history of
castles which tells of how the barons oppressed and forced workers to throw
up huge stone monuments to fear and greed.
