Greetings to all,

It might be interesting to compare the work of Daryl Schmidt (in the SBL
Seminar Papers of 1983) with that of Neumann. Schmidt argued that the style
of 2 Thess does not match the Pauline undisputed letters and so 2 Thess is
probably Not authentic. He did this using Chomsky's understanding of the
ways syntax works and presents it as the sort of "objective" evidence that
it sounds to me some see the work of Neumann to appear to be. Of course, he
comes to the opposite conclusion.

I think it is correct that matters of authorship cannot be decided on the
basis of style alone, but the text's theology must play a central role. All
of that to say that seemingly statistical and objective measures will not be
all that it takes to make a case in either direction.

This discussion might also note that Luke Johnson takes issue with the
consensus position on some of the Pastorals. See most recently his Anchor
Bible commentary on them.
