Forgive me if this gets posted twice--I seem to be having technical difficulties with my email today.
I think I have hard copies at my house of some of these if anyone is interested--the Dillon Fence, the Veldt, & the John Svara ones. I know for sure I saw the John Svara one in my pile of mags last night and I'm pretty sure I have the other two. Seems like the Dillon Fence one was a small bit in the "New Faces" section if I remember correctly, and I remember photos of the Veldt & JS being pretty big, so maybe they were longer articles.
By the way, Dillon Fence is playing for free in Raleigh tomorrow (Sat. 7/22). It's downtown in Moore Square in some kind of Budweiser sponsored music series that is apparently going on all summer. I think there are other bands during the day & night but word is that DF will be on by 8pm sharp. I hope to be there for just the Dillon Fence part. So if anyone else wants to relive their college days or go see something you never got to see b/c you moved here too late... :-)

Rolling Stone is indexed in some of the EBSCO databases available in

you can search these at any NC college or public library, or go to your
public library to get the password to use NCLive remotely.
I found pieces that were close, but not anything about the scene in
general. Are you sure it was in Rolling Stone?
One from 1992 covers Dillon Fence among other new US bands.
One reviews the collection `Tossing Seeds (Singles 89-91),' by Superchunk,
and profiles John Svara among other "real college bands."
There's also one that covers the Independent (1993) and one from 1994 that
covers the Veldt.
If any of those are of interest i can send the references.

you might want to check with your local public (or college) library and
see whether they have a CD or online index going back to the late
'80s/early '90s (they'd probably only have the actual issue on
microfilm). i tried searching the archive on the RS site, but no such luck.
