(This is the message I get from iTunes when I tried what you suggested with a tune I'd downloaded off iTunes. I'm running iTunes 6.0.)

You can now delete the MP4AAC file if you wish.

This is not complicated and I stand by the fact that iTunes works
really well, all the time. Any obstacles that are in place that keep
things tight are probably a result of negotiations with the RIAA.
You know, that irrelevant body known as the RIAA? Yeah, they still get
to make heavy handed demands...for now.
