I'm not an expert on the inner workings of PCMCIA,
but I'm wondering if you might need the tcic module.
Apparently it is used instead of i82365 in some cases.

So I got it, put it on a floppy, and loaded it into /home.
Then when I do insmod tcic.o (am I missing something here?), I get:
Using tcic.o
insmod: not an ELF file
insmod: Could not load the module: Success
And just to make sure, running cardmgr -vo afterwards didn't change
