Message from Steven
===================

now I get the same insmod error when it starts,

The same error you were getting just before?
The "success" one? Or an earlier one?

It would be *much* easier if you simply quoted
the error message.

causing a lack of drivers in .proc/devices...

A "lack of drivers in .proc/devices" ???
I'm afraid you've lost me. What drivers ?
Do you mean /proc/devices ? Are you saying
it's messing up the device list in /proc/devices ?
How do you know? Is that mentioned in the error
message?

Cheers,
Steven

Ok, so here's the error message (I didn't have enough time to copy it all down last night, sorry)
/<#>/etc/pcmcia/start
Using /lib/modules/2.2.26/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o
insmod: a module named pcmcia_core already exists
Using /lib/modules/pcmcia/tcic.o
insmod: not an ELF file
insmod: Could not load the module: Invalid arguement
Using /lib/modules/2.2.26/pcmcia/ds.o
insmod: init_module: ds: Device or resource busy

May 5 04:51:31 cardmgr [91]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices
May 5 04:51:31 cardmgr [91]: exiting
/<#>

So I reverted /etc/pcmcia/start back to the other module, and I get
/<#>/etc/pcmcia/start
Using /lib/modules/2.2.26/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o
insmod: a module named pcmcia_core already exists
Using /lib/modules/2.2.26/pcmcia/i82365.o
Using /lib/modules/2.2.26/pcmcia/ds.o

May 5 04:55:23 cardmgr [97]: unsupported card in socket 1
May 5 04:55:23 cardmgr [97]: exiting

At the second try, the drive spins, whereas the first time it didn't
With this I assume that tcic.o is not right for this laptop, something that is further proven by the model, which is a IBM Thinkpad 560 (not the 560X), and some info on the PCMCIA can be found here: http://arctic.org/~dean/tp560/
No mention of the use of PCMCIA CDROMs are there...
