Thanks for doing this searching on my behalf, Sindi. I've actually begun
looking at installing other linuces on this laptop now, but may yet
reconsider.

Try the X_SVGA from BL2. It worked better for S3 than the one in BL3.

In BL2 you can use the BL3 kernel to save memory, and copy over the pcmcia stuff, or use a 2.4 kernel with USB. Or upgrade BL3 X (use icewm?).

I can use this info too. We have one or two laptops with neomagic chips.

There is a neomagic X server that might work better than the SVGA one

http://linux.maruhn.com/cat/X11/XFree86.html (Linux software directory)

XBF-neomagic-libc5 Binary-only X server for Neomagic on libc5 systems
(also available for glibc, and i740 for both libs).

Click the above link to reach a page with a link to a README.neomagic at
Redhat on how to install the server and another link to the actual tgz
file (1999 840K). You may need to edit XF86Config.

ftp://ftp.braz.ru/pub/unix/x11/neomagic/XBF-neomagic-libc5-1.1.0-1.i386.tgz
(I downloaded from this first site, did not check the second).

Looks interesting. But how sure are we that this would resolve the problem
I was seeing? I was hoping Steven might pipe in to opine whether bits of
Xvesa left on the system might be somehow interfering with Opera and its
color requirements. Maybe the xserver you found would resolve the problem
but, then again, it might not.

I presume you mean X_SVGA not Xvesa.

Actually I meant Xvesa. I was assuming that the system might be relying on
some component of the old video system that doesn't work on this laptop.
But I'm doing some rather uninformed guessing; was hoping someone better
informed might have better guesses. Or might even actually know.

James
