Steven, Sindi, et al,
Thanks for all the input. Not ignoring the responses. Taking time to work on the bench, determine exactly what computer (there are five) has what resources, configurations, etcetera, and do my homework.

3com actually provides 'unsupported' drivers at their site
(http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux
You may need to agree to their GPL license.
3c90x-1.0.0i.tar.gz for 3c900B 905B 905C 980 980B 980C 982
kernel 2.2
and a later version for kernel 2.4 or SuSe 2.2.18
(maybe that means it was tested with these linuxes)
3c90x-1.0.0j.3-121-01.tar for Redhat
also
3c09x-102.tar.gz for other linux for 3c900B 905B and C
Try your laptop with my 2.4.31 kernel and module for the card.
http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/2.4.31
Any kernel there ought to work. The module is in modules package.
If you have dialup I can post it separately for you.
The only problems people mentioned for this chip were an old driver (1999)
gave an irrelevant error message, and someone thought it was running slow.
So it could be your hardware is the problem. Try a 3c905 card in a
desktop with BL3.5.
