Can I get them from newer sections of the Slackware site?
Or do they require only library upgrades?

BL3 normally runs libc5 executables -- available in
Slackware 4 and earlier. It is possible to upgrade
the libraries to glibc2 (which is much larger) and
run executables from Slackware 7 and later.

The Slackware 8.1 glibc lets you run Opera 8.54.
Glibc from Slackware 9.0 still works with 2.2 kernels. Glibc from Slackware 10.X does not.

I think the Opera 9.01 that I downloaded for Slackware 8.1 requires glibc 2.3.2 (Slackware 10.X). How can someone with the latest glibc determine which glibc Opera requires? I got an error message when I tried to run what I downloaded, about needing GLIBC2.3.2. I don't want to do another one hour download to confirm (I deleted the previous file).

Is there a way to run an existing BL installation
(BL3 or Slackware 7.1) with the experimental kernel?
....

Also, the kernel must have an appropriate config
for the filesystem -- for example, in order for a kernel to
work with the BL3 loop version, it must have loop capability
in the config.

The 2.4.31 kernels appear to mount the loop file system read-only. So are not advised for loop BL3. You can write to the DOS partition but not to the linux file system.
