operating system.

He's booting the BL2 iso using qemu--a virtual machine application the allows you to run other operating systems within a host operating system. He's using WinXP and a version of qemu compiled for Windows, so his host machine runs XP, while qemu is booting BL2 as a sort of application. Sort of like a DOS box, only Linux runs within the box rather than a DOS shell. Almost any other OS can run in that same box: BSD, other versions of Win, OS/2(?), all flavors of Linux. Mac would be the exception, I believe.
