You first have to establish a TCP/IP connection.
This can be done via a modem or a network card.
For a modem, you execute pppsetup (assuming you
have a compatible modem). For a network card,
you do the following steps:

activate the network card (insmod)
assign an IP address to the card (ifconfig)
assign route to gateway (route add default gw)
----------------------------------------------
