Good chance to learn isapnptools.

I never did learn isapnptools. I just gave up and compiled a new kernel.
I found it much harder to learn isapnptools than compile kernels. I
may be interested in descriptions of how to use isapnptools.

Part of it is fairly straightforward. Install it and run isapnpdump. This will generate a config file in /etc called isapnp.conf or something like that. If it succeeeded in detecting any ISA boards (it doesn't always, and will give you indications of this at the command line), the config file will have information about it and various settings it can use (IRQ, DMA, etc). You then uncomment the appropriate lines in that file and get your system to run isapnp at boot. Or just run it from the command line. My problem was determining which of those lines to uncomment: it wasn't very clear. Fortunately, someone with the exact same sound card as mine had done a write-up on the web and provided values that worked for his card, so I used those.

I tried running pnpdump and was told there were no pnp cards.
I will, for fun, try it on an SB16 that I think is pnp (at least I can change the settings in Win98 in control panel, system - on another SB16 I could not make any changes). All I really want to do is determine the current settings, not change them, in most cases. In one case the current settings conflicted with another card and I was able to change them in Win98. In two Vibra16 cards Win98 detected the cards with settings that were different from what worked in DOS and linux. Win98 - irq 5, DOS - irq2, linux - IRQ 9 (I tried everything else first). ?????

How is pnp designed to work? I hear it does not work so well in linux. You can also run DOS isapnp before loadlin if you want to have kernel instead of module support for cards.

James
