Good chance to learn isapnptools.

I never did learn isapnptools. I just gave up and compiled a new kernel.
I found it much harder to learn isapnptools than compile kernels. I
may be interested in descriptions of how to use isapnptools.

Part of it is fairly straightforward. Install it and run isapnpdump. This will generate a config file in /etc called isapnp.conf or something like that. If it succeeeded in detecting any ISA boards (it doesn't always, and will give you indications of this at the command line), the config file will have information about it and various settings it can use (IRQ, DMA, etc). You then uncomment the appropriate lines in that file and get your system to run isapnp at boot. Or just run it from the command line. My problem was determining which of those lines to uncomment: it wasn't very clear. Fortunately, someone with the exact same sound card as mine had done a write-up on the web and provided values that worked for his card, so I used those.
