Regarding the 600MHz computer which plays wav files in linux (with two cards) but not mp3. I tried an awe64 card, then an awe32 card (both creative not vibra).

In DOS the awe32 card plays wav, midi and mp3 cards but I noticed during boot that it was not happy with the I/O base address 220. It worked anyway. I ran the SB diagnose program and it could not find any available base addresses.

The awe64 card does not play any sound in DOS. I ran the Diagnose program and it told me that IRQs 2, 5, 7 and 10 were taken. In linux I am told 2 is taken but 5, 7 and 10 are free. (Ethernet card is 11).

DOS syschk tells me that 2 5 7 and 10 are free. I know 2 is taken by cascade. I don't believe syschk. Before I disabled the onboard parport it told me this parport card was using irq 7. I don't think it can have its irq changed but I might have another MGA card with a jumper for IRQ.

I then tried linux again and sb.o won't even load with this card.
It had loaded before and played wav files.

We just put in an MGA/parport card because the onboard printer port would not print at all in linux (and in DOS it printed an entire page on the first line - linux has more sense than to allow this?). This card has IRQ 7, which may be why sb won't load now, because the card (awe64) may be set to use IRQ 7, which is taken.

I think it is plug and play - will pnptools let me change the IRQ from 7 to 5? Otherwise I will find a sound card with IRQ 5 that works in DOS.

The awe32 card is older, a CT3600, but also has no IRQ jumpers.

Why does DOS play sound when there is an IRQ conflict but linux does not?

If the onboard parport had been working I could have changed it to IRQ 5.
This is much more educational. ;=)

Thanks to whoever suggested that there is a problem with my sound card(s). It just showed up with different symptoms - in one board no wav files, in the other board wav but no mp3.

I hope to have sound working in a day or so in order to try out the latest Mplayer (or even the first version that I built this computer to work with). And then to resuscitate the 350MHz computer with another IRQ5 sound card.

Is there some way to detect the IRQ of an ISA sound card in linux? Do I just keep changing the IRQ in insmod sb line until something works?

DOS diagnose only tells me that the IRQ conflicts with something else?

Maybe Win98 can be of some use?
NSSI?
