I have a 600MHz computer which plays wav but not mp3 files when I insmod sb with irq=5. When I try to play mp3 files (I think with mpg123) there is an IRQ/DRQ conflict with two SB16 cards.

AWE64:

When I try to insmod sb with irq3, 4, 11 or 12 'Device or resource busy'.
When I try 5 7 9 or 10 it does insmod but 'Probably IRQ conflict" and then mpg123 does indeed have a conflict (but sox does not).

How do I find out which IRQs mpg123 and mplayer are using that sox is not?
Or which devices they are using, which have IRQs?

DOS sb16 diagnose said there was a conflict with 2 7 9 and 10 too.

Win98 (once I started it a few times to get it used to the new hardware) said it had automatically set the card to use IRQ 9 but it also accepted IRQ 5. IRQ 7 was taken by a USB to PCI adaptor. I tried disabling usb in CMOS. IRQ 10 was taken by the ethernet card. The sound card works fine in Win98. It even works (in a DOS box) to play midi files with a player that requires awe32 to play good midi sound. I can't run linux in a dos box.

Linux assigns the ethernet card IRQ 11. I took the insmod tulip out of rc.S and there was still a conflict with 10 and 11 was still device or resource busy.

AWE32

I had it working in another computer in DOS, as IRQ 5. It also works in this computer in DOS and plays wav, midi, and mp3 files. But DOS sb diagnose says there is no available base io address (either 220 or 240). It plays anyway as io 220 tho there is a complaint at boot time. It works just fine in DOS.

In linux it plays wav but not mp3 files.

How do I determine, in linux, why irq 5 7 9 and 10 are all busy?
IRQ 7 is the printer port but I don't want to remove it because sometimes I like to print. IRQ 5 is free in Windows - why not in Linux or DOS?
Same for IRQ 9.

Would a PCI sound card work here? I don't see how any ISA card is going to work since they all need to use some IRQ. Should I try removing the printer port as a test? Boot without loading any printer modules?

Why are these IRQ conflicts occuring with the newer but not the older boards? Asus 300 or 350MHz K6, and now this one, both with USB ports.
I have not tried mpg123 on the 475MHz K6 or the Gateway 300MHz, all with USB ports. Do USB ports usually conflict with ISA sound cards?
