I thought that version didn't work properly?
It converts but does not play with our kernel and OSS.

but it needs a later kernel and ALSA to actually
play sound.

Making it less relevant to BasicLinux.

However David came up with a nice script in which
mplayer converts the sound to .wav and sox plays it
as streaming audio.

A temporary kludge at best. For such limited
functionality from mplayer, we can surely find
something *much* smaller.

I hope David will compile a smaller version that also plays music with our kernel and OSS on older computers, but in the meantime you only need to add his mplayer.tgz package to Christof's BL sound packages to play very nice sounding streaming audio.

The Mplayer package I found at linuxpackages.net is 24MB and has lots of dependencies so this 3MB static version is a real improvement.
