Static = no library needed?

No ncurses needed?

Static usually means all libraries are compiled in.
For Opera it means you get everything except libc compiled in.

Get mpg321-0.2.10.tar.gz source (111K) from 2002

Based on MAD, xmms and plaympeg code and billed as a drop-in replacement
for mpg123, which has not been updated since 2000.

A libc5 version should work in BL2 since I already added libc5 for
netpbm. (But in my experience lynx compiled completely statically
refused to work online until I gave it glibc6. Worked fine
offline.)

I'm not sure it would be much better than any other player.

It might handle the newer headers at least. First I would need a better connection.

Mplayer looked like it had 25MB of dependencies. How big is your
static version?

5MB uncompressed. Unleashing bzip2 on it squashed it down to 2.2MB.
Keep in mind that this has nearly everything. DVD support, and also
85 audio codecs, 192 video codecs, X11, FB, basic VESA video, several
audio drivers, blah blah blah.

How did you get it this small, dietlibc? uClibc? Amazing.
I would be interested to try it - much smaller than Realaudio or even Opera. We even have a DVD drive that we have not found any use for.
I bet other list users would also appreciate your posting it.

[SDF $10/month network access]
Are you SURE this is access to something other than just sdf itself?

I'm sure. From the SDF site:
"SDF provides dialup PPP (network)...access"
"To find numbers in your area, type 'dialup' at the shell."

This is wrong - type 'getdialup' followed by the area code.

My partner listens to Recordings for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped. They are still sending out tapes but will probably
switch to CD. He wonders if he can rip the CD to mp3 and somehow
speed it up (delete one out of three sampled bits) since he likes to
listen faster. He has modified tape players to let him adjust the
speed (different size pulleys, resistors, switches - various
approaches).

There are several different ways to do this.

Adjusting a tape player motor skews the pitch, too. mpg123 can play
every other frame if you want it to, which keeps the pitch normal
but sounds like an auctioneer hollering out bids.

He is used to listening to his tapes sounding like 'The Munkeys'.

mpg123 -d 2 stream.mp3

This probably cuts quality in half as well as going faster.

I have not used cdparanoia but I think it came in the same package as cdda2wav. Will try it some time on a library 'Book on CD'.

cdparanoia's output can be piped to sox and sped up or slowed down
as needed. Real-time digital playback from track 1 on a CD:

cdparanoia -rqZ "1" - | play -traw -r 44100 -f s -s w -c 2 -

Sped up by a factor of 1.5 ala a tape player:

cdparanoia -rqZ "1" - | play -traw -r 44100 -f s -s w -c 2 - speed 1.5

(you can also just change the 44100 sampling rate to something higher)

Sped up with normal pitch:

cdparanoia -rqZ "1" - | play -traw -r 44100 -f s -s w -c 2 - stretch .75

Sounds perfect.

cdda2wav can do something similar.

I will read about it. I have only used it to get files from music CD that I can burn to a copy. There is some way to play the wav file while ripping it, with a switch.
