mp3123 `wget -O - http://path/to/m3u/`

The answer was so simple that it eluded me. :)

The m3u file I looked at contained the URL for a .pls file - will
this still work?

No.

I have looked for other mp3 players newer than 2000 and found:

mp3blaster (Nov. 2003) - CLI, source or static binary (which might
need a later glibc).

Static = no library needed?

No ncurses needed? I have not looked at this as it is a 1.1MB download which would take me 20 minutes. The static version is not the latest, it is at least 2 years older. There seem to be changes to the MP3 format which keep mpg123 from working at some sites so newer would be better.

Binary is 584K or 1.1M depending on the
version.

MAD - used in many other players (CLI?)

Zinf 2.2.5 - also does Ogg Vorbis and Shoutcast. GUI. 2MB source

mpg321 -prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mpg321 is one download site.
Get mpg321-0.2.10.tar.gz source (111K) from 2002

Based on MAD, xmms and plaympeg code and billed as a drop-in replacement
for mpg123, which has not been updated since 2000.

I may attempt some day to compile this for BL2, but I am sure David
could do it faster. (I still have not gotten to the Matrox kernel).

I'm not sure about the faster bit. I don't have the BL2 development
things, just uClibc and libc5.

A libc5 version should work in BL2 since I already added libc5 for netpbm. (But in my experience lynx compiled completely statically refused to work online until I gave it glibc6. Worked fine offline.)

I don't think there is much point to my getting a better mp3 player without a better ISP. My 'faster' ISP (the one that does 24K with a few blips) is also free (10 hours/month) and probably overcrowded. The unlimited free account (at a local community college) did not even work at 24K. I wonder if paying $5/month (no webspace or telephone support) would provide a faster connection. It is getting a bit annoying to download programs at a fluctuating 0-2.7K and get bumped off after 62 minutes and not be able to access google (lynx times out and starts looking for www.google.com.edu) after 4 pm.

Last time I tried Realaudio it was with a paid ISP. I should put BL3 and an MP3 player onto the parport drive and try it out on someone else's connection. I have glibc 2.2.5 in BL3 for use with xpdf and opera and I can simply copy over the BL2 mpg123. I will up the .img size to 60MB.
I would probably also need an external 56K modem. A neighbor with linux is also shopping for a cheap ISP.

The neighbor next to the one with the 'dead' computer is also interested in linux. They both have university accounts and only want to browse, do email, and write letters.
