Where would I look for something for S3 Trio64V or Virge, both VESA
1.2?

From http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO-5.html:

"Alternatively, you may be able to download kernel patches to allow your
VESA 1.2 card to work with the VESA framebuffer driver. For example, there
are patches for use with older S3 boards (such as S3 Trio, S3 Virge) that
supports VESA 1.2. For these cards, you can pick up patches from..."

I may try this in a year or two, or wait for people to give us VESA 2.0 boards, or learn to configure Xsvga better.

Could I add to .xinitrc as first line 'resizecons 80x25'? My only serious problem with Xvesa other than on one laptop is that it messes up my console when it exits. I just got a nice ATI card that does 100 columns in text mode.

Or make an alias X='resizecons 80x25;xinit....' ?

DOS was a lot easier - just use the univesa driver and all cards work.

Could you set up something that would work with BL2 and BL3,
assuming certain minimal hardware (1280 monitor, 2MB RAM) that
would be transferrable between machines?

Yes.

With Xsvga or just framebuffer?

I had a difficult time
with Xsvga answering all those questions about the card and monitor
and don't want to go through this with every new computer.

Does it not have a configuration file you can copy between PCs, and/or
edit?

I don't know how to edit it properly for different cards. I am using S3 Trio64, S3 Virge, Tseng, ATI, and one Trio 3D, and a couple of AGP cards. Accidentally the configuration for the SiS card worked with the Virge.

I have two PS/2 mice that won't work with Xvesa, one that won't
work with svgalib. Are they also fussy about FB?

They probably would be, as all the display-independent stuff is
common between Xvesa and Xfbdev. Do those mice work with ANY
version of Xvesa? Gpm? Imps/2?

One of the mice works fine on one computer with Xvesa, on another computer it keeps Xvesa from loading (seg fault) and on a third Xvesa loads but the cursor will not move. The Microsoft Mouseport-Compatible one lets me load Xvesa and move the cursor but it scoots to the right edge of the screen and stays there. I will not use those mice, or the one that won't work at all (cursor won't move) in svgalib. Or the Logitech Mouseman unless I want to compile another kernel. Low-tech solution - change mice.
All these mice worked with gpm. The wheel mouse worked in svgalib with imps/2 and in Xvesa with psaux.

svgalib appears to be limited to 1280x1024x256 colors. Would
links2 run in more than this with FB?

The best you can do with a 2mb video card is 1280x1024x12bpp. Can
you get that mode with some other software with this card?
Our 2MB Virge, Trio64D and Cirrus cards do 1600 at 256 colors in Xvesa or in DOS. 1280 works at most websites.
