Could I add to .xinitrc as first line 'resizecons 80x25'? My only
serious problem with Xvesa other than on one laptop is that it
messes up my console when it exits.

Xinitrc is executed when X starts up. How would that help?

I have rc.S set to 'resizecons 80x30'. (I had to do this three times in a row to get a full 30 lines instead of just 25 lines of smaller text). If I go into Xvesa with the virtual terminals set to 80x30, then things get very messed up and I lose my cursor in MDA or VGA (when I exit Xvesa). Exiting from 80x30 to plain 80x25 should eliminate this particular problem with Xvesa (assuming I have not also loaded another font).

I could perhaps do this in an alias instead:
'resizecons 80x25; xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvesa ....'

I will experiment with this. Is there some way to set up an alias so that when I exit it goes back to 80x30? Or maybe a script to do this instead? Is .xinitrc a script? The main problem is however forgetting to go back to 80x25 before Xvesa and ending up in a mess without cursors.

With Xsvga or just framebuffer?

Probably framebuffer. I have no experience with Xsvga.

One of the mice works fine on one computer with Xvesa, on another
computer it keeps Xvesa from loading (seg fault) and on a third
Xvesa loads but the cursor will not move. The Microsoft
Mouseport-Compatible one lets me load Xvesa and move the cursor but
it scoots to the right edge of the screen and stays there. I will
not use those mice, or the one that won't work at all (cursor won't
move) in svgalib. Or the Logitech Mouseman unless I want to
compile another kernel. Low-tech solution - change mice.
All these mice worked with gpm. The wheel mouse worked in svgalib
with imps/2 and in Xvesa with psaux.

Are these all serial mice? If not, how are the ones that crash hooked
up?

All PS/2 mice. I have a source of free mice and will just keep trading until they all work with everything. I want to keep the serial ports free for use with external modem and nullmodem cable.

Our 2MB Virge, Trio64D and Cirrus cards do 1600 at 256 colors in
Xvesa or in DOS. 1280 works at most websites.

It probably would work with VesaFb. I don't know that for sure, but the
math checks out.
I will try this eventually. Still trying to digest all the other info about networking, security, and USB.
