CF-PCMCIA sleeves sell for $5 here (brand new).

I bought one here for $15 a few years ago, but have seen them closer to
$10 more recently.

CF-IDE adapters cost a bit more.

I paid $20 for mine, but they might be considerably cheaper on Ebay. This
one was like Steven describes: a little adaptor meant to hook to an IDE
cable with a slot for a CF card on the other side. No fancy faceplate to
mount it in your case or ability to handle other types of cards.

I thought Steven said it hooked to the IDE controller (the 'pins').
Which is it? If to the cable, these might fit into one of those boxes intended for use with external hard drives that goes into a 5.25" bay and is attached to an IDE cable that plugs into the controller. How long is this adaptor?

Plug-in Adapter - cfdisk.5d

This compact flash adapter fits directly onto a standard 40 pin IDE
header without any cable. Due to its height in may not fit into every
chassis. Since the 40 pin IDE bus does not supply power to the adapter
a floppy type connector has been provided to power the CompactFlash
Card.

3.5" Adapter - cfdisk.1c

[The above I think plugs onto the pins of the IDE controller and was what Steven was talking about]

This compact flash adapter requires a generic 40 pin IDE cable. It has
a jumper to allow operation as master or slave drive. The power
connector is a standard hard disk style connector.

2.5" Adapter - cfdisk.2d

[The above seems to plug to the IDE cable which plugs into the controller and is what James was talking about, I think.]

This compact flash adapter matches the footprint and mounting pattern
of a 2.5" disk drive. However, it is not a 100% mechanical replacement
for a 2.5" disk drive. It requires a 44 pin cable which also supplies
power to the drive. No other power connectors are required.

--------------
It would not be convenient to have to open up the computer to transfer photos but we could run a cable out through a bay or an open slot in back, I suppose.

Our laptop computers use 2.5" IDE drives without cables, whereas the desktops use 3.5" with cables. Why are they producing 2.5" that need cables?
