For Compact Flash cards people suggested cheap adaptors that let you use them as IDE drives without special software.

I checked out adaptors for Smartmedia cards and there seem to be at least four makers of them: Fujifilm ($90-100), EDGE memory ($24), Sandisk Flashpath ($19 at one site) and JVC. These are all floppy disk sized things that plug into the floppy drive and hold the card. They take 2 lithium batteries.

Ebay has a JVC adaptor for $0.99 starting bid (0 bids so far) with $6.50 shipping and no details.

Two unused Sandisk models for $10-12 with shipping starting bid (and 0 bids so far). These need software. The Windows software needs 16MB HD and 32MB RAM. Also calls for PII 233 MHz. The website said it works with linux as well. This does not seem like the right solution for BL.

If it did not need the software this would make for a good portable linux. Unlike the compact flash cards, this seems to be only a way to read and write, not to use the card instead of a hard drive.

I will research which cameras take compact flash cards. Thanks for all the info.

It might be simpler and easier to transfer via serial cable or even USB cable (with USB kernel).
