This appears to be something that lets you plug an IDE device into a USB port and I think the discussion is more about how to use memory cards without USB support (which Steven does not plan to include in the BL kernels) but it was an interesting site and thanks.

Sindi, check out this site - it may be what you're looking for.

As a matter of interest I have a card reader mounted which has slots for 4 different cards. It fits into a 3.5inch bay and plugs into the front panel USB pins on the motherboard. I also have a similar device which is portable and was very useful for uploading photos to a web site from assorted internet cafes during a recent trip.

Can you recommend a particular type of memory card?

While following your link to other links I ran across the fact that Amazon.com is offering big rebates on compact flash cards such that a 128MB card ends up $3.49 (probably plus shipping) and a 512MB card $29 so these would be a great way to run BL on a laptop if you have the right adaptor for a laptop (a 2.5" model).

I am interested in a camera that takes Smartmedia cards (Olympus D-360L serial) and SM adaptors seem to be less common. I did run across a SmartMedia 3.5" floppy adaptor that requires a Compact Flash adaptor to work. Smartmedia cards appear to be an older format and come in 2,4,8,16,32,64 and 128MB and are more expensive than Compact Flash (at least after rebate on the CF). 32M $16. A friend advised against them, and someone on the web said they kept breaking.

CF-PCMCIA sleeves sell for $5 here (brand new).

I bought one here for $15 a few years ago, but have seen them closer to
$10 more recently.

CF-IDE adapters cost a bit more.

I paid $20 for mine, but they might be considerably cheaper on Ebay. This
one was like Steven describes: a little adaptor meant to hook to an IDE
cable with a slot for a CF card on the other side. No fancy faceplate to
mount it in your case or ability to handle other types of cards.

I thought Steven said it hooked to the IDE controller (the 'pins').
Which is it? If to the cable, these might fit into one of those boxes intended for use with external hard drives that goes into a 5.25" bay and is attached to an IDE cable that plugs into the controller. How long is this adaptor?
