does removing files from a ramdisk not maked it use less ram?

I'm not sure. I'm think an empty ramdisk uses
minimal ram with a 2.2 kernel. But I'm not sure
that still applies when you fill the ramdisk and
then delete it. You might have to zero the ramdisk
to reclaim the space.

Did the BL3 first disk 'fill' the ramdisk when it put on 13K of file structure? How would I zero a ramdisk?

The amount of buffer did not change when I removed the ramdisk (umounted) but that can be reused, I think.

I will try using the modules and links first after just umounting /usr/X11R6, which might be adequate.

Our 2400 bps pcmcia modem in a faster 486 was able to
make a connection to the ISP. The 2400 bps internal
modem in this slower 486 was not (I tried three times).
Why?

Some ISPs have a minimum connect speed and refuse anything
slower. It is possible that your pcmcia modem does
compression, thereby tripling the effective speed.

Or maybe something timed out while it was trying to connect? That even happens rather frequently at the highest speeds. I can't complain as the service is free to students.

I have a DOS mail program that worked at 2400 bps from a hard drive but not from a floppy disk, because it timed out. It worked at 9600 bps from a floppy disk. (We had a laptop XT without hard drive).

Does the computer speed affect this?

Not with a 2400 modem. The bottleneck is the modem.

The question is just academic anyway. We have external modems.
And if we need to carry along a keyboard for use with this computer, may as well take a modem as well. 2400 bps can be used if you have something else to do at the same time.

I will check out links in 8MB soon.

Cheers,
Steven
