how to kill it after I am done

Use ps to find the process number and then
kill that number. If it doesn't die, kill
it again with the -9 parameter.

Things like agetty and pppd and Xvesa have been refusing to die until I name them and kill pidof. What does -9 do? Why does kill pidof work when kill number does not.

Or just kill pidof?

If you know the exact name of the process:
-----------------
kill `pidof name`
-----------------

That works it sometimes takes several times. I may have loaded the same thing more than once but ps only lists it once.

Cheers,
Steven
