How do I unload agetty other than kill pidof?

Killing the getty does not work. It respawns.

The simplest way to stop the getty is to comment
out the line in /etc/inittab and reset your system.

I meant if I don't use inittab but simply type out that line, starting with the path to agetty and going to the end, how to kill it after I am done so I can use the port for something else without rebooting?

In DOS you unload some programs with -u. Is there some generic equivalent for linux? Or just kill pidof?

Cheers,
Steven
