Having run out of good computer I put linux an Win98 together on two
computers, with our two 56K nonwinmodems. DUN was connecting at 28.8 or
31.2K until I changed the modem setting to 56K V90 on the Win98 SE
computer.

The other dates from before we had the Win98SE CD and has ver 4.10.1998
(first version of Win98?) to which I added some programs and changed fonts
etc. I discovered I cannot install SE on top of it - wants me to go buy
the Win98 upgrade disk instead.

This version offers 56K flex and X2 (two obsolete standards for 56K) but
not V90. At another time we tried a couple of upgradeable 33K > 56K 1997
lucent winmodems and another 56K winmodem (flex and X2) and they would
connect only at 28.8K - the standards are no longer supported. So it has
to be V90.

Is there some way to add 56K V90 by copying over a file between computers?
All I saw on the CD under modems drivers seemed to be winmodems, not V90.

If not, can the CD somehow be used to install on top of the older version
without having to wipe it out first?

The older Win98 also chokes on my B: drive (360K) and the newer one
ignores it (does not think it is there). Five loud clunks and a long wait
each time I arrow past it in My Computer.

I thought of also putting in our 56K winmodem (which I do know how to
install in the older Win98) but there is no free ISA slot (I already had
to remove the HGC card to put in the non-Windows sound card).

The primary purpose of this Win98 is Realaudio which benefits from 56K.
I wish I had sound working in linux and could forget Windows.
I want to listen to Bulgarian and Czech internet radio.

I know this is not really linux related but without linux on the computer
I could be using a winmodem and/or PCI sound card and not having these
problems. The two OS'es do not coexist peaceably on new computers without
enough ISA slots. (I have five empty PCI slots).

A solution of last resort is to delete the Windows directory (come back in
1/2 hour) and run setup from the CD (and then go through and delete all
the Welcome, AOL and MSN junk again for a few hours). If I don't also
delete Program Files would my program settings remain unchanged when I
reinstall programs?

'I hate Windows'.
