Ok. I tried the Slack 3.5 net.i kernel on this machine. Loadlin did
handle the bzimage, and the NIC *was* detected and set up properly -
hooray! I used the BL1 dhcp client to enter network settings and was able
to browse with Links, so this kernel does handle the NIC. I'm not quite
sure how to find out how much of memory it's taking up, though. "free"
shows about 2/3 of available memory in use after the OS is fully booted
but no programs have been started. Shows 1072kb free memory, if memory
serves (no pun intended).
