It's a semi-journalled version of ext2. Not sure exactly what
makes a "journaling" filesystem different, but I understand they're less
susceptible to filesystem corruption. About the only other potentially
pertinent thing I could say on this topic is that I understand ext3
differs from other journalled/journaling filesystems in that its really an
unjournalled filesystem (ext2) with a "journalling layer" added. Other
journalling filesystems (e.g., reiserfs) were created to be journaling
from the start. Can anyone else help clarify this matter that I
understand only vaguely?
