I unzipped and placed the file into /bin and I also downloaded
/a3/cxxlibs.tgz and installed that.

I tried flwriter from a default-size xterm with no window manager and very
quickly crashed twice with segmentation fault. The second time it also
gave me two copies of the following error message:
X_GetWindowAttributes: BadWindow (invalid Window paramter) 0xc00037
Perhaps the program is designed only to work with a window manager.
With no window manager, flwriter ran in a half-size window in the lower
right of the screen.

I then tried it with ratpoison (since I cannot get icewm to work and have
not had time to read about ion) and it did not crash. And it ran in a
full-size window (all ratpoison windows are apparently full-size). At
first there was a great deal of lag in the typing (I would type ten
characters before the first one appeared) but that eventually went away by
itself. I got the same lag without a window manager.

So I have two reasons to use a window manager now - reduces crashes and
you automatically get a full-screen window.

Many of the features are accessible without a mouse, but bold italic and
center are not in the menu, only the toolbar. The File Edit Tool menus do
not have the first letter underlined but you can still hit Alt-F etc. to
access them. Some of the submenu items have two-stroke keyboard commands
(alt-q for quit) but many do not. My arrow keys don't work (X does not
seem to have a definition for my 84-key keyboard) but I could probably
access the other items with the arrow keys if they worked.
Can one access toolbars without a mouse?

Would anyone like to help me get my keyboard working with X? I think I
would need to modify some existing key mapping. The arrow keys act like
number keys for me and the backspace does not work (nor, I think, the
PgDn).

I was pleased to see there are only three fonts - mono, sans-serif
(default) and serif - and that you don't need a mouse to choose them.

I tried Virtual Keyboard (Tools, Edit?) and chose Cyrillic and was
rewarded with a large number of squares containing ? I had already
installed the Cyrillic fonts (xfcyr.tgz - I checked in the package list to
confirm this). The Help menu offers a choice between a local man page
(which I don't think was included by Steven) and online help. I will
check the flwriter site for documentation and try to get Cyrillic working.

Everything else that I tried appeared to work but I did not try much.

I was going to try out features of flwriter while online (from VT3) with
Kermit, but when I type Alt-F5 to get back to X I get a black screen with
blinking white cursor instead of flwriter now. ?? Maybe flwriter does
not like Kermit.

I did not try to include images, import/export RTF, print, or spellcheck.
Do I need to run lpd first before printing in X?

I will try Ted after I find the email describing how to install it with a
script.

Has anyone else tried flwriter yet? It seems like a nice, relatively
simple and well-behaved program.
