David:
Whereas the Greek meaning of grace outside of the New Testament may
have had the meaning of freedom from the observance of the law, inside
the New Testament it had the Hebrew understanding of freedom from the
penalty of the law.
Freedom from the observance of the law has a different source,
starting with the understanding that Jesus gave a new covenant as
predicted in Jeremiah 31:31 and implied in Deuteronomy 18:15–18.
This is getting a little off topic, except as an illustration of how
the New Testament continued the Hebrew thought patterns from Tanakh,
even though in a different language, namely Greek.

A most excellent example, Mr. Randolph! There are many more like this. For example,
the Greco-Roman understanding of "grace" as 'freedom from observance of the
law' vs. the Hebrew one of 'freedom from the penalty of the law.'
