A cord is a stack 8 ft long by 4 ft high by 4 ft deep. In the old days,
when fireplaces were big enough to walk in, cord wood was cut 4 ft in length
and burned in the big fireplaces, hence the term. Now a days the wood isn't
cut as long; it'll come in varying lengths depending on the wood cutter's
estimate of the stove size he or she is cutting for.
Often you'll get a face cord, which is a stack 4' high by 8' long by
whatever depth the length of one log is. In the South where I live, they
don't know what a cord is or even a face cord. They sell wood here by the
Rick. I don't know the etymology of this word, but as far as I can tell, a
Rick is a hillbilly's rough estimate of a face cord piled in a heap on the
ground. I tried to buy cords one year and everyone thought I was from...,
well they just called me a damn Yankee.

How much is a "cord"?
