Lawrence, when you first brought up hosting of Zope at ibiblio
you said that we should present them with a proposal and that
they would consider setting up a Zope server to meet our
requirements, probably within 6 months.

Why are you now so gung ho about buying them a server when they
have already said that they would consider providing the hardware
pending evaluation of our requirements?

They said that they might eventually offer global access to a Zope server for
their content providers.
They was no sure propect of this happening at all. They need lots of $$ to put a SAN disk storage unit online (which we would benefit from greatly).

Sorry if I mistakenly conveyed the impression that ibiblio would definitely
put a Zope machine online in 6 months. I "got that impression" from someone I
talked with there
but when their staff at large discussed it it became clear that it might
happen if and when thay had the money for it.
They have a lot of expenses not the least of which is paying for bandwidth
(ibiblio uses a LOT of bandwidth) - something
else that is expensive that we would benefit from.

Why not present them with a proposal and see where it leads?
That has already been done and I reposted back to the list about this. See
above.

There is no need to rush into any decision on hosting the live site.
There is a good 6 months (probably more like a year) of design,
development and testing still to be done before we have anything
worth going live with.

And regarding the ibiblio scenario...

What about the concerns John S raised about the structure of the
hosting on "our" machine at ibiblio? What if the level of access
UNC graciously allow us on our own hardware is inadequate to
allow us to set up and run ZOPE and other software in our desired
configuration?

Knowing the class of services offered by ibiblio and not being a techie
myself I would find it hard to believe that what they would
offer us in that department woule not be adequate to meet our needs. Today I sent Fred soem of John S. questions to find out more about just that.

What if ibiblio decide ZOPE is something they no longer want to
maintain or offer as a hosting platform?

This would never happen. Take my word for it.

What happens if ibiblio decide at some stage in the future that
hosting this project is not something they want to continue with?

This too is totally unlikely. The only instance of this that I am aware of is
a website that was pushing the
copyright violations envelope too far (or rather wanted to then decided to go
elsewhere for his hosting where he could do what wished
with less worry about copyright violation).

I do not support paying for commercial hosting ever.

Please describe for me the functional difference between paying for
commercial hosting and buying hardware and then giving it away?

Because we are giving it to ibiblio who would provide us with high quality
FREE hosting indefinitely into the future.
You can take my word for it. After a year or two and our traffic and
bandwidth usage has increased exponentially how far do
you think $6500 will go? Not far.

I need an answer from Stephanie and/or the group, if consensus is
preferred, regarding HG's role in funding a Zope machine now.

My opinion is that spending money on hardware is a complete waste
of scarce resources. Especially when that hardware is being given
away and not even retained as an asset!

Then if its my money and that of one or two other contributors it can hardly
be considered a waste.
Then again if we go with Option 2) below, should my donation be used to pay wages
or reserved for Zope machine purchase or 1/2&1/2?

My wishlist:

1) enough money to make sure all necessary programming is paid for
2) ibiblio hosting asap using the software platform Chad described
3) somehow find a way to buy a Zope 3 machine for ibiblio asap

I'm not going to block anything, you all can go around me and I will not be an obstructionist but the idea of paying for commercial hosting when ibiblio is there for us for free foorever just throws me.
