Having had horses on both pelllets and grain I can tell you the transition
from anything to pellets is done very carefully. Depending on the feed
source and formula the pellet may be too dry or tough at first until the
horse adapts. It has several advantages over other feeds in storage, price
stability, and lack of contamination but it is not something I would switch
a horse on and off of rapidly. Oil or other supplements may ease the
transition but it is very horse specific. Currently there are no horses on
pellets in the barn where I board although the barn has used them in the
past generally but went back to grain mixes. I presume that there are always
horses that need special diets but switching feed types is not usually a
good idea.
