By definition: Laminitis is a very painful foot condition. Basically it is
a state of congestion that affects the vascular system within the hoof.
Causes: It can be attributed to anything that may upset the vascular
balance of the feet.
Examples: Overwork, idleness and want of excersize, digestive disturbances,
improper shoeing, febrile and debilitating deseases, difficult parturition,
inefective conditions of the uterus and pneumonia, accidents causing more
weight to be distributed to one foot
We have a burro that came into us severely foundered. It has taken us over
a year to get his feet from looking like ski toes to a near almost normal
looking hoof. Though he almost looks good, he still and more than likely
will always be foundered and need strict attention to his feet. His was
casued by improper diet, with too much processes food and grain. We put him
on a straight grass hay diet, trimmed his weight back and he is looking
good.. He is only 3. SO since he has never been ridden, his case was not
from overwork. He is not as ouchy and goes through cycles of pain when his
feet require a trim and once done, the silly fool is out their bucking around
chasing his pony companion! Ponies are notorious for founder, but most of
them are improperly fed as the main cause with them most often suffering from
grass founder...which is too rich of feed and too much. Overwork can
attribute to what is called road founder...generally the road founder is
caused from excessive
work. Even fit horses can get founder if pushed beyond their normal
physiological balance. Big fat idle stallins are also prone to laminitis.
Either way the vascular system is upset and diet needs monitoring to help
correct and along with a savy farrier.
FOUNDER IS ALWAYS CONSIDERED AN UNSOUNDNESS.
