I am ccof organic and have been for years.  I am certified for my customers.  the stores need certification to put me in the organic section.  the markets need certification for put me in the organic section.  I do it so my customers know I am inspected and do the paper work to show I am organic.  I dislike the USDA .  they release GMO that are destroying organic growing and yet they own the word organic.  Its a bad deal but its the law.  the USDA have the guns and can fine you so I try and follow the law.  Does not mean  that is right .  it is a form of slavery  you are working for the USDA.  the inspector is working for the USDA and the certifier is working for the USDA.  it is like the mafia is the USDA and you pay they protection money or they make you pay,.  it like the USDA is telling you organic is theirs and if you want to work that corner you pay off.  I have to pay the state of Ca. and the certifier and the inspector and they do nothing on the farm.  they move paper work.  I thought let the people eat the paper.  but I have to pay  property tax of they take my land so I need to slave out to the USDA to let folks know I am organic and I pay off all the bottom feeders. This year after expenses the inspector the certifier and the state of Ca. made money even if I did not.   I give them their pound of flesh.  I would be organic ANY WAY because I see how do it works for me and I do want my customer to know I grow organic and can understand why a lot of folks want organic food.  When I can't pay any more because no money and I old I guess I will farm the same WAY  but not be organic because I don't have the money.  YOU have to pay if your a farmer and make over 5000 a year.  that is a rip off but that's the what the government does they need to rip us off because they don't hoe they don't work all year to bring in a crop and they have to market it , they just take our money.  so they get the nice house and big car and good life by ripping off the organic grower and getting protection money.  but does the USDA protect organic NOOOOOOOOO  they destroy it. I can understand why folks that farm organic don't want to bow down to the USDA but I do it because I want my customer to not panic its organic.

NOP co-opted --and perverted-- the concept "organic".

I consider myself "strictly organic" but will never seek organic certification.

It seems to me that CNG is more in keeping with the meaning of the word AND the stated intent of NOP.

Maury,
I consider myself a rabid environmentalist who believes the conventional American food chain is a REAL threat to human health. I've been off the deep end since I read "Silent Spring" in about 1969. I grow organically and I am committed to the practices that guide organic growing.
It is my understanding that the regs on the use of the term do not apply to coversations, written or not.Labeling and adverts and documents, yes. Please tell me if you believe that I am wrong about that. If you are familiar with CNG you know that it is based on the same methods prescribed by the NOP. Is it the term "strictly" you object to? I am headed, begrudgingly toward USDA. I assume you are and so are dissing CNG. NO?

Todd,

I thought you said you were Naturally Grown”.   Now you say you are “strictly organic”.  If you are not certified by the USDA as organic, you cannot use the proprietary term “organic”.  I am confused.  I do not need an explanation of the term “certified Naturally Grown”, I know what that is.

Phil,
I gotta say you sound cynical as hell.  I can tell you right now that at 59 I have only been farming for under 5 years and I'm strictly organic and your perspective has little connection to today's program. I got a house and there are very few restrictions on this program and the ones there are have not caused me any grief or cost me any money. In fact my production went up considerably as has my income. I am aggressively growing food 12 months a year in my houses and have no overbearing guidelines from the NRCS.
The ONLY things they mandate in my area are things I'd do anyway. Erosion control and record keeping. I've read some posts that referred to a number of rules and regs that simply don't apply in my state
I can only speak about my experience but this program has the potential to help alot of farmers and has and that includes those who did not get one of these houses. I am cofident that when they eventually publish their findings that a lot of folks will consider HT growing to improve their bottom line.
The idea that a gov program is necessarily an imposition rings hollow for me.
Not sure how you cut profits 200%.
