Check your local regulations; there may be none applying, or a number of them, and you want to find out ahead of time. In my area (which is in both a different town and a different state, so it may well be different where you are), an open stand selling only your own produce would definitely be permitted, as long as any signs fit within the sign ordinance; but a building large enough that customers actually come inside the building would have to meet state building code for such purposes; and if you were going to sell anything other than your own production, a special use permit would probably be necessary.

If you do have to get a permit, don't panic; in many cases these are granted almost automatically, as long as you go through the procedure. You can ask in advance what the standards are, and for advice on how to set up so that you meet them.

How many folks on this list have a farm stand?  We're thinking to set one up
here, but it would take some effort to create a new driveway, build the
building, etc.  And wow, we've seen some really successful ones and some real
losers.  Any guiding principles?  Any good books or other information sources
that could help us make the most of it?
