We have cleared forest to make pasture and gardens.  A Logger took all the
wood.  Took saw logs and chipped the rest.  My neighbor is caretaker for
a large land owner and has use of a excavator with thumb.  He pulled all the
stumps and piled them.  Three acres and it took him 6 hours at $85/hr.
It was well worth it for us.  That was 8 years ago.  We picked roots for
a couple of years after that.  Neighbor also buried them another 6 hours
a year or two later.  Groundhogs had a den under them.
 
Large farms are buying wood lots and clearing them
