I’m new to market gardening, and am finding it so haaaard to get motivated for fall, as we are into a week of dry weather and I know more is coming.  I too try to keep pulling up peas,  and the remains of kohlrabi and lettuce, beets and continuing to plant little patches of this and that.  I am not planting in raised beds, and it is so hard for me to get excited about planting into “used” soil. LOL.  But..I’m trying to keep at it, thinking that all the other gardeners are in the same boat.  If I persevere and succeed, the reward of having a variety of good fall produce will be all the more sweet.

A fall planting schedule is compressed. EG a 4 day difference in planting can produce a 10 day change in harvest, or more. The closer you get to fall the more accentuated this is.

I keep planting knowing that some of it will die, but I do it in small batches and curse myself that I didn’t write down the planting dates when it works.

Hi Marie! I'm planning two small beds of fall/winter crops. They are planned around parsnips and leeks that I'd like to leave in the ground as long as possible. I'm also planning to plant beets, carrots, endive, and more lettuce in those beds. I will cover the beds, maybe with a double cover like Coleman's 'quick tunnel' with remay inside, but I want to be able to get into them easily for winter harvesting.

I'm also planning fall peas. Does anyone have any tips for this? I counted back the number of days to maturity from our first expected frost, so I should plant around July 20. Will they do OK with summer heat early in their growth? ('Summer 'heat' here means mid-80's).  We have a long period of mild weather with occasional frosts in the fall...I know the plants are frost-tolerant, but will they keep producing peas after frost?

Regards to the list:

It is almost time here in zone 5 to plant fall crops. What are you all planning to put in for the fall crops?
