Suzi.....after 30 years plus growing nearly everything that can be grown in zone 5 and marketing all of those plants in every way possible, and having been born in Iowa, I advise you to stay in school. Go for the master's degree and then a pHd.  Certainly, there are lots of ways to make some money in farming...but we need educated decison and policy makers also.  If you love the land, and the dirt manicure, be an advocate in a nice policy-making position with benefits and paid vacations.  You have plenty of time, dear wannabe, to grow a new planet especially if you are in a position to guide the future.  We desperately need educated, enlightened land stewards in decision making positions.  Think bigger and grander: what would you do if you knew you could not fail?

(yes, this is exactly the advice that I gave mine own little farmer wannabe now at the University of Wisconsin.)

Shawnee, zone 5 and still hopeful as I finally see the flocks of robins returning to this polluted land.
