Suzi. I have market farmed for 34 years and enjoyed it. And would do it again. I have made a full
time living at it but its very hard and does not get easier as you age. You would think that those with
lots of cash, land , equipment etc. would be most successful. But no its those who can stand the
adversity that nature throws at them that succeed. A market farm is no different than any other small business
they usually fail in a few years. You might see someone selling organic heirloom tomatoes at the
market for $5 each and think there is a lot of money in growing tomatoes. But nature usually takes back
one dollar for every dollar you earn. That farmer selling $5 tomatoes will get a heavy rain ending a long
drought and the next morning every one of those $5 tomatoes are split and worthless. That is what happened
to me last year. It will happen to you, it happens to all of us more often than we like. That is why nobody gets
rich market farming we just get by. I very happy you take intreat in farming we need despreatly need young people.

Howdy all,
I am going to be graduating from college coming up here in may.  What
I really want to do is veggie production and farmers market, but I
dont own any land.  From your experience, is market farming profitable
enough to pay for rented land?  Is it best to go somewhere and get a
job for a few years so I can make a big downpayment, or should I try
to find land to rent and go into it right away?  Any opinions are
defiantly appreciated.
Thanks so much!
