I have run diesels out of fuel more times than I would like to admit.
But, here are some observations:
1) If you shut the engine down and re-fuel as soon as your notice a
power drop off, it will likely not need bleeding.
2) When it seems you do need to bleed, a little starting fluid may
suffice. Use at your own risk. Do not use starting fluid with glow
plugs that have been pre-heated.
3) My Sprinter (5 cy MB diesel) is supposed to have "automatic bleed";
I tested this feature this past season. It did eventually start, but
it took a couple of minutes of cranking. I feared the battery would
not stand the test.
